The pre-June 2009 222 EX ST operators have upward facing AWOG’s (accumulator without gas) assemblies. Over long periods of time or if the oil level has dropped too low air can build up in the AWOG hose. When there is too much air it will compress as the motor starts then immediately expand causing the pressure relief valve to be tripped. This will cause a very slow buildup of pressure and may take 2-6 seconds or more before you see the gate start moving.
This air needs to be bled from the accumulator then normal operation will occur. The AWOG is a 1" diameter hose about six inches tall mounted to the rear of the pump pack manifold. You will be able to see the cap near the fan blades at the top of the motor. To bleed the AWOG two wrenches will be needed. One for the cap and one for the hex right below the cap. Before bleeding the reservoir can needs to be full of fluid. Fluid should be within a half inch below the fill plug on the reservoir can just below the gauge.
Procedure:
1. Release the toggle handle so the drive wheels are not clamped to the drive rail
2. Manually pull or push the gate clear of any limit switch activation.
3. Press open or close and let the motor run watching the pressure gauge until a stable pressure is achieved.
4. Crack loose the fitting at the top of the AWOG. Just enough to loosen it and have the air purge through the threads. Once oil is visibly dripping out tighten the cap.
5. press stop on the keypad, re engage the drive wheels to the rail.
6. Test the function of the operator. It should immediately buildup pressure and then about 1 second later the gate should move.
Most of the time it only needs to be bled once. If the issue quickly returns the pump pack may need to be replaced completely due to internal wear.
